UCSB Fall 2020 Transfer Thread

I know it's a little early, but I thought I'd find other UCSB prospectives to share stats and give each other hope.

Major: Undecided, but switching between a lot. Currently applying as geography BA with religious studies alt. Will likely double.

GPA: 3.79 CCC courses. 3.66 once my previous UC courses are counted.

ECs: None, really. I struggled to find a job when I moved back home from my UC. Worked as a sign spinner on the weekends now I tutor middle school students.

My IGETC should be done by the end of fall 2019, so I plan to spend spring 2019 knocking out some geography lower divs.

Applying for TAG. Let's get it.

Should I update my TAU with Summer 2020 coursework?

I did my initial TAU in January and it had all my Spring 2020 Coursework + Fall 2019 Grades.

However, I sent ANOTHER TAU in mid-Feb that updated my 'IP' grade to an actual letter grade.

Should I send another TAU (it would be my 3rd one) for the Summer 2020 coursework that I plan on taking?

Is it even worth taking Summer 2020 classes since the course I plan to take is not major-prep and merely on the list of "Additional Approved Courses For This major" on assist.org

The only reason I plan on all of a sudden taking some Summer is because I was thinking it could potentially help my chances for application if an admission officer sees that I am taking major-related/assist.org courses over the Summer prior to transfer.

Is my understanding, right? Will taking Summer 2020 courses that are major-related increase my likelihood of admission?

Stats:

GPA: 3.87

All major-prep taken, IGETC finished, I'm just debating if it's worth taking Diff Eq over the Summer since UCLA/UCSB has it down as an "additional recommended course" but technically not major-prep.

Thanks!

I've received an email invitation to apply for the Transfer Alumni Scholarship at UCLA twice in the last week, and I hear that they only email top applicants. I'm hoping this is really good sign. Has anyone else gotten this email who is trying to transfer to UCLA?

UC vs. CSU - Can a CSU rank higher than a UC?

UC: San Diego, Santa Barbara, Riverside, Irvine
CSU: San Diego, Fullerton, Long Beach, Northridge
Major: Linguistics (Language Science at UCI)

I have googled everything I possibly could & went on plenty of forums, but cannot figure out which programs are best. I can't find much info at all about the CSUs, especially the way that the UCs show stats on Admit/Enroll GPA ranges.

For the department, school prestige, & any other additional factors, how would one essentially rank these school's departments &/or the schools as a whole? I feel like you can't always say that any UC is better than any CSU. Take money out of the equation also.

Applied to one major but taking courses for another. Will it be a problem?

I applied to Berkeley as an Interdisciplinary Studies major. The only pre-reqs were 2 classes which I finished back in Fall.

However, my main goal is to do Cog Sci over there so I have been taking Cog Sci courses concurrently (I applied Cog Sci for the rest of the UCs back in Fall and finished my major-prep for them).

I want to take some Cog Sci courses in the Summer (not as major-prep but as "additionally recommended" courses). If I were to update my TAU with this change would Berkeley think it's a bit suspicious?

Do I have anything to lose by updating my TAU?

Hello everyone,

I applied to UCSB for the fall quarter 2020, submitted my TAU and all. However, I made a major error with one of my classes right now and missed the deadline for an entire chapter's worth of assignments (I know I know). I'm likely going to drop and take a W, however, how will this affect me, especially considering I already submitted my TAU?

Reporting in progress grades

Hi, I am a TAG applicant and a UC transfer applicant and I was wondering if there’s ever a time between now and the end of the semester where I need to report in- progress grades, or if there are any circumstances where I need to report in progress grades. Or do they just need the final grade?

Is there any way to update one's apps as things happen? If someone is bestowed a great honor, is there any way to get that in front of admissions people?

Will I be rejected from certain UC's if I exceed 90 semester units from Community college?

I want to major in Electrical engineering. I have taken two years in community college and will have about 75 units by the end of this semester (currently with a 3.7 gpa). I only applied to CSU's for the fall of 2020, but now I want to stay another year in CC and apply to UCSD, UCSB, and UCI. I still have about 20 units I can take for my lower division courses at CC. I just don't want to be a part time student or take a semester off. What should I do?

To those applying for UC Berkeley College of Engineering

Here's something I found to be reassuring. A direct quote from a UC Berkeley podcast episode on how to transfer into the College of Engineering:

"LV: Let’s talk about the admission rates. What are the admission rates for the College of Engineering for transfer students.

JW: Well for transfer students previous 2018 year the transfer admission rate for the campus was about 23 percent. For the College in general I think it was about 12 percent. So significantly lower than that. However, we want to point out that out of the eligible students, so students who completed all their prerequisite requirements, submitted supplemental forms, close to 40 percent of the students of those, were admitted. So you know the admit rate of 12 percent is very deceiving and maybe discouraging but you know you should be happy to hear that if you’ve satisfied all your prerequisite require, filled out the supplemental forms and you have a three point five GPA or higher, that you know your chances are pretty good at getting admitted.

LV: So overall those numbers really shouldn’t discourage the students.

SM: No, the 12 percent shouldn’t discourage students because if you’ve taken all the courses that you should have taken, the required courses, and you filled out the supplemental forms you had to fill out, and your overall GPA is at three point five or higher. You actually have a 40 percent chance. So that’s a pretty good chance."

TLDR; 12% admission rate to College of Engineering is somewhat misleading, 40% of those who've completed prerequisites, submitted supplemental forms, and have a qualifying (3.5+) GPA are admitted.

Let’s ask questions as we get near to applications and acceptance!!

Transfer Decision Early?

I had a quick question for you all regarding my transfer. I was hoping you could help answer it if you have time.

I am awaiting my transfer decision for UC Berkeley, my #1 choice for transfer. I also applied to other places but this is where I really want to go. However, I am wanting to take a summer class this coming summer at my local CSU (organic chemistry 2) so that I do not have to take it after transfer. Is there any way that I can call UC Berkeley and see if I got admitted? If I sign up for the class and later find out that I do not get into UC Berkeley, then there will be no point of me taking the class in the summer as I can just stay at my CC and take it the following year. I am concerned that if I wait until April when decisions are announced, there may be no room left to sign up fro my summer class as registration is beginning this week. What should I do in this situation? Thanks in advance

Transferring Credit to Berkeley from a CC

I'll make this short and simple.

If I take a course that is a part of a major prep the summer before I transfer at a community college (assuming I am admitted) can that count?

For example: MCELLBI C61 is the class I am considering. It is not offered at my school but I recently realized it is offered at another community college, if I take that in the summer before I transfer, can it count when I enroll at Berkeley?

Will I be rescinded?

I tagged UCR but I only got accepted for my alternate major (which is in a completely different “school”). I honestly won’t bother responding to UCR because of this but I thought we were guaranteed admission to our major of choice?

Missing One Prereq For CS Or Maybe Not?

Hey ya'll,

I applied as a CCC transfer for CS. I've completed all of the prerequisites with classes that articulate, except for CMPSC 16. I go to a smaller community college, and I decided to take online CS classes at a bay area CC so I could complete a advanced data structures course. I'm completing that this quarter, which fulfills CMPSC 24 which is basically the course directly in sequence after CMPSC 16.

I took two semesters of programming courses which articulate to some but not all of the other UC's, usually both semesters count towards completing one introductory programming course at those UC's. I started on the second out of three programming courses at my bay area CC, skipping the first in the sequence since I was pretty sure it would just be review. I got an A- in that second course and should at least get a B+ in the third course. Found out my original two courses don't transfer to UCSB, so basiclly I have courses 2 and 3 but not 1 as articulated.

I'm wondering if this course prerequisite might be overlooked because I've already covered that material with my two semesters of unarticulated programming. I was sort of considering taking the part 1 course this next quarter, but generally speaking I don't think I would learn much new and it wouldn't really make a difference for the other UC's I applied to. It's probably wishful thinking, but I'm not sure how strict UCSB is on what coursework they use for their requirements. Has anyone gotten into transfered missing 1 prereq? I wasn't planning to contact admissions, but idk I should have some of the strongly recommended courses completed as well.

Thanks for your time and advice in advance!

UC to CC to UC/CSU transfer?

I'm a freshman at UCSC and I haven't been doing as well academically as I hoped I would. I'm also not feeling the social environment at this school as much, and feel like I would have a better experience at another college/location with a major that I'm planning on switching to. Also with the coronavirus scare and COLA strikers, spring quarter might or might not be entirely online.

I'm only getting 15 credits instead of the 30 that I would have got if I passed all my classes. Which got me thinking of starting again at community college. I was thinking of transferring to either UCI/UCR/UCSD/UCD/SDSU/CSULB for international relations/ public policy.

I guess the questions I have is if I could retake the failed courses at CC? Or do I have to retake the classes at UCSC to replace the grade? Does my course/ grade history from UCSC count into my GPA when its time to transfer? I'm kind of worried I won't do good at CC either and might not be able to transfer anywhere. I'm also scared of missing out on some of the college experience for the time I'm gone.

Any advice appreciated.

Moved: Got Irvine Regents but waitlisted by UC Davis. What does this mean for UCLA or UCB?
